Billed as "The Essential Tool for the Treo 650 & 600", Butler is indeed very useful. Let's take a walk through the features of this multiple function/enhancement program.

First among the functions is the Navigation tab which itself contains two Treo enhancements. The Keylauncher allows Treonauts to use a single key to activate an application, from any other application or the menu screens. This does require you to set up the association in the favorites first but works as advertised - mostly. I successfully launched "Dial Pad" from the main menu by holding the "T" key. One annoyance here: my Treo beeped twice before launching the application, every time. The cause: it seems Butler is a little slow to activate the Hotkey you've setup.

Still in the Navigation tab, we move down to an enhancement for the external volume buttons on the Treo. Here, Butler allows us to use the buttons as the "Back" and "Forward" buttons we usually associate with Internet Explorer. In "Switch" mode, they are enabled to allow you to move back and forward to the last and most recent applications used. In "Scroll" mode, the buttons become scroll bars - very useful for reading e-books. Both functions worked as advertised though I found the side buttons more awkward to use for reading than the five way switch center to the Treo.

Our second Butler function is enhanced LED control. Butler enables you to have complete control over the color of your Treo LED to include setting the hours the LED will be on or off. My Treo holds a charge for several days so this was not a huge deal for me but turning the LED off between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM makes economical battery sense, especially as I am generally asleep during those hours (unless I owe David a write-up I should have had in a week ago). The author of this program has included the option to set the LED to a specific color when you have voicemail but not included any other functions. As one who attends meetings several times a week, I would have found this a better indicator if it were keyed to say...an SMS or overdue appointment.

The next Butler function is the hyper-keyguard. Butler allows you to override the native keyguard functions. The replaced keyguard gives you control over the lock time, allowing from 1 to 30 seconds. Additionally, pressing one of the hard function keys on the Treo now gives you a display with the time and the setting of your ringer. Last, this function also allows you to disable the touchscreen when incoming calls are received or in progress, making unintentionally answered or inadvertent disconnections a thing of the past. These last two functions, along with being able to set the lock delay are the best parts of this function; the time/switch display didn't jump out at me. The display comes up and leaves too quickly and the information displayed is easily determined via the native means (i.e., looking at the top of the Treo and at the screen when pressing calendar).

Next up is the "Attention Grabber". This function will literally nag you to death, reminding you as often as every 10 seconds or as little as every 15 minutes, from 5 to 30, or 1000, times. You can specify "non-nag" hours, too. As the native Treo software will try only a couple of times on a missed call or appointment, Butler will ensure you do not forget to acknowledge the event. You can even specify a specific sound, ringtone, or .mp3 as the reminder tone. A nifty feature, overall, and one that came in handy a couple of times when I had to leave the office and forgot my Treo, only to come back 15 minutes before the start of another event. Butler made sure I was there in time.

If you send and receive a lot of SMS traffic, this next option is for you. The "Hide SMS popup" does just that. The phone will still audibly alert you and the asterisk appears in the upper left hand corner, but you are able to remain reading your e-book or taking notes or checking your calendar without the SMS interrupting the immediate task at hand. Two thumbs up for this feature.

Tab 6 of 8 inside Butler offers three small utilities. First, old-school Palm users can now access the command bar via two options: shift and menu, or 'held menu'. Second, there is an option to beam your business card by holding the phone button down. Third, and perhaps the best option, is the "Keep Exchange Manager Clean" utility. This utility is the authors attempt to address the preference loss bug known to the Palm OS.

Next on our list of options is what amounts to the most powerful of the tools Butler brings to bear; consider it the "nuclear option" if your phone is ever lost or stolen. In the harmless part of this tool, Butler can be configured to lock and turn off your Treo via SMS. In the Armageddon option, Butler can wipe the SD card and RAM, then lock and turn off your Treo. No kidding around here.

Last on our list of Butler functions is the 21st century alarm clock. The native world clock for Palm allows only one alarm to be set. To work around this, you have to set up reoccurring or one-time appointments in the Calendar. Butler has ratcheted this up a couple of notches. With this program, you can have up to 6 repeating alarms. They can be set up with customized messages and actions, too. This is perhaps the most useful eature; if you have reoccurring appointments that you don't want to clutter your calendar with - or perhaps take medicine at precise times regularly - this is definitely a feature you'll use.

All things considered, Butler is a very useful application that brings together several useful functions. Workarounds exist for most of these; Butler streamlines them, however, and makes the Treo experience that much better. Would I buy the program? Consider it done.

Butler is available for $14.95 in our store.
