Overview

The iStyles Treo Privacy Screen Protector is different from your typical screen protector. The claim is that besides protecting the screen, it also obscures the view of the screen when viewed at an angle from the side. It is definitely a feature I know some would be interested in, especially those that have to commute on a train, subway, or bus. You don't always have the space to keep prying eyes a good distance away. People tend to be nosy or just plain curious about what you're doing when it seems to be interesting.

Installation

The installation was straightforward and a bit less painless than installing other screen protectors. This one is a bit thicker than your typical adhesive based screen protector. Being thicker makes it a bit easier to apply without having a ton of miniature bubbles to work out with a card. That's one thing I can't stand with the typical thin adhesive screen protector. That's that reason that I've stayed away from the adhesive type in favor of the type that fits under the edges of the screen. I can say that this is a screen protector I could live with from an installation point of view.

Usability

The screen protector does a good job at protecting the screen. The one issue I have is that it's thick enough to be a bit of an issue when using the touch screen. On occasion it would be difficult for a tap to register properly with this screen protector, so you end up having to tap a bit harder than you would if it wasn't there at all. So, that's one aspect of it that I could have done without. I've been using it for a while now, and luckily it hasn't been much of an issue, but that's mostly because I tend to navigate my Treo mostly with the 5-way directional pad.

Now, the key differentiator of this screen protector is something that is difficult to describe in words. I originally thought that it didn't work as advertised, until I realized that I had the privacy protector applied incorrectly. I had to rotate it 90° so that it would become opaque when viewing from the side, instead of from the top or bottom like I originally had it. The privacy functionality does work to a degree. It definitely gets a bit darker the more of an angle that you view the screen from the side. My one issue is that to have this characteristic, the normal view of the screen is a bit darker than normal, since the screen protector can't be clear to have this characteristic. It also has a strange wavy look to the screen, which I would assume has to be there to support the privacy functionality.  That makes it a bit more difficult to read the screen, at least initially until you get used to it.  So, if your eyes are sensitive to something slightly obscuring the clarity of the screen, then this is not the screen protector for you.

Here are a couple of videos to show the side view of the Treo before and after applying the iStyles Privacy Screen Protector.

Conclusion

I can say that for the most part the iStyles Treo Privacy Screen Protector works as advertised. Those people that must have a crystal clear screen protector will not like this one at all. Also, if you can't stand having to tap a bit harder to have the digitizer recognize what you're selecting with the stylus, then definitely steer clear of this screen protector. If you want to have a bit more privacy when working with your Treo on a crowded commute, then you should definitely check it out. It will definitely help you in that regard, and I can definitely recommend it for that usage.

The iStyles Treo Privacy Screen Protector is available for $9.99 from the iStyles website.
